Public Realm Improvements on Queen’s Road Coming Soon
We’re excited to share that Wimbledon Quarter will soon be getting a fresh new look along Queen’s Road, following the recent green light for extensive public realm and landscaping works.

The London Borough of Merton has approved plans to enhance the streetscape, making it greener, brighter, and more welcoming for everyone who lives, works, and visits the area.
Key highlights of the upcoming works include:
- A heritage-sensitive new glazed extension to the former Magistrates’ Court, blending modern design with the area’s architectural character
- Wider pavements in front of the former Fire Station and our Queen’s Road entrance, resulting in a shortening of the current bus lane (which will have no impact on the bus route along Queen’s Road) making it easier and more enjoyable to walk along
- Greener spaces with seasonal planters, shrubs and new cycle stands
- Outdoor seating areas for al fresco dining and relaxing
- Improved lighting to highlight Queen’s Road’s stunning historic building facades
- Better step-free access into Wimbledon Quarter from along Queen’s Road
With The Fire Station Café now open and new restaurant spaces available within the former Fire Station and Magistrates’ Court, Queen’s Road is set to become a vibrant spot to meet, eat, and enjoy.

Merton Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Civic Pride and Climate Change Councillor Eleanor Stringer said:
“Wimbledon town centre is a thriving hub for our community – for all those who live, work or visit the area. The planned improvements reflect what we know residents want from their town centres – wider pavements, more greenery and updated street furniture – creating a spacious and attractive area along Queen’s Road that showcases its beautiful, listed-building facades.
“These works will open up more space for people to eat, socialise and enjoy time together, as well as creating an innovative environment for new businesses such as cafes, bars and restaurants to thrive – bringing new amenities and job opportunities to our area.“We’re excited to see this work progress in a way that preserves the area’s character for the benefit of local people, and boosts civic pride for everyone in our borough.”
Work is due to start in early 2026 with completion expected later in the year.
We’ll be sharing updates as the project progresses, so watch this space!
